Many people call it footy or Aussie rules. Two teams of 18 players compete on an oval field.

This field is often a modified cricket ground. Players score points by kicking an ovoid ball. Kicking it between the two central goal posts is worth six points.

If the ball goes between a central post and an outer post, it is called a "behind." This earns the team one point. The game is known for high scoring and spectacular moves.

Players use many ways to move the ball across the field. They can kick, handball, or run with it. A handball is a specific way to pass using the hands.

You cannot throw the ball in this game. If a player runs with the ball, they must bounce it on the ground. A special part of the game is called a "mark." This happens when a player catches a kick under certain conditions. When a player makes a mark, they get to keep the ball without being tackled.

The sport began in Melbourne, Victoria, in 1858. It was inspired by football games played at English public schools.

A man named Tom Wills helped shape the early game. He was a star athlete and a cricketer. Wills wanted a way for cricketers to stay fit during the winter. In May 1859, the Melbourne Football Club published the first official laws.

These rules were meant to be simple. They also removed the roughest parts of English games to prevent injuries. This made the sport safer for working men. The Melbourne Football Club is one of the oldest clubs in the world.

History shows how the game grew across the country. In 1866, the running bounce became a formal rule.

The game used to be played with 20 players on each side. Early matches often took place in parks with trees. Some players even used trees as goalposts! By 1879, the first match between Victoria and South Australia took place.

In 1883, leaders from different regions met to make the rules the same everywhere. This helped the sport spread to places like Queensland and New Zealand. Today, the Australian Football League, or AFL, is the main professional competition. It is a very wealthy and popular sporting body.

Australian rules football is a huge part of life in Australia. The AFL Grand Final is a massive event held every year.
