Many people call it Aussie rules, footy, or simply football. The game involves two teams of 18 players competing to score points. Most matches take place on cricket grounds that have been modified for football.

Players use several specific methods to move the ovoid ball across the field. They can kick the ball or use a technique called a handball.

A handball is a way of passing the ball with the hands, but throwing is strictly forbidden. If a player chooses to run with the ball, they must intermittently bounce it or touch it to the ground.

A very distinctive feature of the game is the mark. A mark occurs when a player catches a ball kicked by another player under specific conditions.

When a mark is awarded, the player receives unimpeded possession of the ball. This means they cannot be tackled until they dispose of it.

Scoring in Australian rules football is quite unique compared to other sports. The field features central goal posts and outer posts.

If a player kicks the ball between the two tall central goal posts, their team earns six points. If the ball goes between a central post and an outer post, it is called a "behind." A behind is worth only one point.

During general play, players can use any part of their bodies to move the ball. However, there are strict rules regarding physical contact. Players can tackle using their hands or their whole body to obstruct an opponent.

Dangerous contact, such as pushing an opponent in the back, is discouraged. Referees may issue free kicks, distance penalties, or suspensions for such infringements.

The sport's history began in Melbourne, Victoria, during the year 1858. It was inspired by football games played at English public schools.

Tom Wills, a star athlete and cricketer, played a major role in its development. He wanted a way for cricketers to stay fit during the winter months. In May 1859, the Melbourne Football Club published the first official laws of the game.

These rules were designed to be simple and suited to hard playing surfaces. The founders also wanted to remove the roughest aspects of English games, like shin-kicking, to protect working men. The Melbourne Football Club remains one of the oldest football clubs in the world.

As the game grew, the rules changed to make it more exciting. In 1866, the running bounce was formalized as a distinctively Victorian rule.

Early matches were often played in rough public parks with trees. Sometimes, players even used trees as goalposts! Over time, the game moved toward standardized oval fields. This allowed the sport to be played on cricket grounds, which helped its popularity grow. By 1883, delegates from different colonies met to standardize the code across Australia. This helped the sport spread to places like Queensland and even New Zealand.

Today, the Australian Football League, or AFL, is the highest level of professional competition. It is the wealthiest sporting body in Australia.

Many people play the game at amateur levels in various countries around the globe.

Australian rules football connects to many different aspects of society. It has influenced how sports are managed and how professional leagues operate. The sport's development shows how different cultures and ideas can merge to create something new. While some theories suggest an influence from the Aboriginal game of Marn Grook, researchers note that Wills was mainly influenced by his time at Rugby School in England. Regardless of its exact origins, the game has become a massive spectator sport. It continues to evolve through the guidance of the AFL Commission and the Laws of the Game Committee.
