The game takes place on a rectangular field with H-shaped goal posts at each end. Teams compete to score more points than their opponents within an 80-minute match. This match is typically divided into two 40-minute halves. The sport is one of two major codes of rugby football. Its other major counterpart is known as rugby union. Rugby league is a global sport with deep roots in many different cultures.

Scoring in rugby league involves several distinct methods. The primary method is the try, which is worth four points. A player scores a try by carrying the oval ball and touching it to the ground beyond the opposing goal line. If a try is prevented by foul play, officials may award a penalty try. Following a try, the scoring team earns a conversion attempt. This is a free kick at goal worth two points. Players can also score via penalty kicks, which are also worth two points. These kicks are taken from the ground using a kicking tee. Finally, a player can attempt a field goal, or drop goal. This is done by dropping the ball and kicking it on the half volley. A standard field goal is worth one point. However, a field goal kicked from beyond the 40-metre line is worth two points.

Movement and strategy are governed by specific rules regarding passing and tackling. Players must move the ball by running, kicking, or passing. A crucial rule is that passing may only occur in a backward or sideways direction. If a player passes the ball forward, it is an error. The defending team works to stop progress by tackling the ball carrier. A tackle is complete when the carrier cannot move forward or when the ball touches the ground. Once tackled, the player must perform a play-the-ball. This involves getting to their feet and rolling the ball backward with their foot. An attacking team is allowed a maximum of six tackles to progress. On the sixth tackle, the team must change possession through a handover or a scrum.

The history of rugby league began with a major split in 1895. At that time, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) enforced strict amateur rules. These rules prevented "broken time payments" to players. Many players in northern England were working-class men, such as coal miners or mill workers. They could not afford to miss work on Saturdays to play without compensation. To address this, twenty-two clubs met at the George Hotel in Huddersfield.

They formed the Northern Rugby Football Union (NRFU). This new organization sought to create a faster, more entertaining game for paying spectators. Within fifteen years, more than 200 clubs had left the RFU to join the new union.

As the sport evolved, the rules were modified to distinguish it from rugby union. In 1906, the NRFU reduced the number of players from fifteen to thirteen. They also introduced the orderly play-the-ball to replace the ruck. These changes helped define rugby league as a unique sport. In 1922, the Northern Union changed its name to the Rugby Football League. Similar splits occurred in Australia and New Zealand between 1907 and 1908. In Australia, rugby league eventually became the primary football code in New South Wales and Queensland.

Rugby league has a rich international presence and many organized competitions. The National Rugby League (NRL) is the flagship competition in Australia and New Zealand. In Europe, the Super League is the premier club competition. The sport is the national sport of Papua New Guinea and the Cook Islands. The first Rugby League World Cup was held in France in 1954. This was actually the first World Cup held for either code of rugby. The tournament now follows a four-yearly cycle. There is also a Women's Rugby League World Cup, which began in 2000.

Modern variations of the sport allow for different styles of play and inclusion. Rugby league nines is a short-sided version using modified rules. There is also wheelchair rugby league, which is a mixed-gender sport. This version uses heavily modified rules for both disabled and able-bodied players. It retains core aspects like the egg-shaped ball and the forward-pass rule. Additionally, physical disability rugby league was created for ambulatory players. This version held its first world cup in 2022. These variations show how the sport continues to adapt to different needs and formats.
