William Webb Ellis is a name deeply connected to the origins of rugby football. He was an English Anglican clergyman born on November 24, 1806. According to a famous legend, he is the inventor of the rugby style of play. This story claims he changed the game while a pupil at Rugby School.

While the legend is very popular, many rugby historians call it an origin myth. They believe there is no first-hand evidence to prove the event actually happened. However, his name remains a massive part of the sport's global identity.

The legend describes a specific moment of rule-breaking that changed sports history. During a school football match in the latter half of 1823, Ellis supposedly did something unexpected. At that time, football was primarily a game played by kicking the ball. The rules did not permit players to catch or carry the ball in their arms. The story says Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it.

This single action is credited with creating the distinctive handling style of rugby.

Historians have examined several different theories about how the game actually began. One theory suggests Ellis may have been playing an ancient Irish game called Caid. His father was a soldier stationed in Ireland, so he might have known about it. Another theory points to a boy named Jem Mackie. Some reports suggest Mackie was the first great "runner-in" at Rugby School. He was reportedly expelled from the school for an unspecified incident around 1838 or 1839.

Some believe the story of Webb Ellis replaced Mackie's role to protect the school's reputation.

William Webb Ellis had a life that moved far beyond the football field. He was the youngest of three sons born in Salford, Lancashire. His father, James Ellis, was a Lieutenant in the 3rd Dragoon Guards. After his father died in the Peninsular War in 1812, his mother moved the family to Rugby. She did this so her sons could attend Rugby School for free.

William was a talented scholar and a skilled cricketer during his school years.

After leaving school in 1826, Ellis continued his education at Brasenose College, Oxford. He was an active athlete, playing cricket for both his college and Oxford University. He earned his B.A. in 1829 and his M.A. in 1831. Following his studies, he entered the Church and became a well-known evangelical clergyman. He served as a chaplain in London and later as a rector in Essex. He was recognized for giving stirring sermons, including one regarding the Crimean War in 1854.

In 1895, the Old Rugbeian Society conducted a formal investigation into the legend. They wanted to see if the story of Ellis could be proven. The sub-committee was unable to find any first-hand evidence of the 1823 incident. Two former students, Thomas and John Harris, testified that handling the ball was strictly forbidden. Thomas Harris even noted that Ellis was known to take unfair advantages in games.

Some researchers suggest this investigation happened during a time of great division in the sport.

Despite the lack of historical proof, the impact of the Webb Ellis name is enormous. The winners of the Rugby World Cup are presented with the Webb Ellis Cup. A bronze statue of a young Ellis running with a ball stands outside Rugby School.

Ellis died in the south of France in 1872, leaving an estate of £9,000 to various charities. His grave in Menton is still maintained today by the French Rugby Federation. The story of the man and the myth continues to unite rugby fans worldwide.
