Have you ever heard the story of how a sport begins? Many people believe it started with a student named William Webb Ellis.

He attended Rugby School in England during the early 1800s. According to a famous legend, he changed the way people played football. During a match in 1823, he supposedly picked up the ball. He then ran with the ball held in his arms. This was a very different way to play at that time. This single moment is said to have created the rugby style of play.

How exactly did this change the game? In those days, football was mostly a kicking game. The rules did not allow players to carry the ball. Legend says Ellis ignored those rules to gain an advantage. He grabbed the ball and ran toward the goal.

While this act was not allowed, it became a special part of the sport. Some people think the game might have come from an old Irish game called Caid. Others believe a boy named Jem Mackie was the first great runner-in. Even so, the idea of running with the ball changed sports forever.

We can look back at the life of William Webb Ellis to find more facts. He was born in Salford, Lancashire, on November 24, 1806. His father, James Ellis, was a soldier in the 70th Dragoon Guards. After his father died in 1812, his mother moved the family to Rugby. She wanted her sons to get a free education at Rugby School.

William was a good student and a talented cricket player. He later went to Brasenose College at Oxford University. He earned both a B.A. and an M.A. degree there.

Historians have spent a long time studying this famous story. Most experts today believe the story is an origin myth. This means they think it is a legend rather than a proven fact. An investigation in 1895 could not find any first-hand evidence of the event.

Some people say the story became popular to show the pride of Rugby School. Even without proof, the name of Ellis is everywhere in the sport. The winners of the Rugby World Cup receive the Webb Ellis Cup. A bronze statue of him also stands outside the school.
