Do you know the story of rugby? It starts with a man named William Webb Ellis.

He was a student at Rugby School in England. Legend says he changed a game in 1823. During a football match, he picked up the ball. He ran with it in his arms.

This was not allowed in the rules back then. This act is said to have started rugby.

Most historians think this is just a myth. They say there is no proof it happened. Some think a boy named Jem Mackie actually started the style. Others think it came from an old Irish game called Caid.

Even so, the story is very famous. A stone plaque at the school tells his tale. A bronze statue of him stands outside the school too. The Webb Ellis Cup is even given to the winners of the Rugby World Cup. He was also a priest and a good cricket player. He died in France in 1872.
