Players used a soft ball made of rubber. They called this ball a pulu. The first game was in Scotland. It took place in the River Dee. The game was like a wrestling match in the water. People liked to watch it at festivals.

Soon, the game got a new name. People called it water polo. In 1885, a group of swimmers made new rules for it. These rules helped the sport spread to many places. It went to Europe and America. It even went to Australia. Wilson also taught people how to save lives. He wrote articles about lifesaving drills. He even gave prizes to swimming clubs. He was a leader for the Royal Lifesaving Society.
