Ned Haig was a man from Scotland. He worked at a butcher shop. He also loved to play rugby. He joined the Melrose Rugby Football Club in 1880.

In 1883, his club needed more money. Haig had a clever idea to help. He wanted to host a sports tournament. He knew a full game took too long. A normal game used 15 players. It lasted 80 minutes.

Haig changed the rules for the event. He used only seven players per team. He also made the games 15 minutes long. This allowed teams to play many games in one day.

The first tournament was on April 28, 1883. It had eight teams. There were also races and kicking contests. Haig played for the Melrose team. His team won the final game against Gala. They received a prize called The Ladies Cup.

The tournament was a huge success. Other clubs soon started their own games. In 2008, Haig and his club joined the Hall of Fame. This honors their role in starting rugby sevens.
