It is played on a court that looks just like a badminton court. Two teams of two to four players face each other across a net. Instead of using hands, players use their feet, knees, shoulders, chest, and head. The ball is made of woven rattan or plastic.

Because it uses a net, it is like volleyball. Because players use their feet, it is also like football. This unique mix makes the game very athletic and fun to watch.

Playing the game requires great skill and movement.

Players must keep the ball in the air to send it over the net. The goal is to score points by hitting the ball into the opponent's side. The sport is very fast and demands quick reflexes. In some traditional versions, people play in a circle to keep the ball aloft.

In these circles, players might show off tricks or skill. In modern matches, players perform acrobatic moves to win the point. It is a wonderful way to show strength and coordination.

This sport has a very long and interesting history.

Some believe it came from an ancient Chinese game called Cuju. In Myanmar, a similar game called chinlone has been played for 1,500 years. In Malaysia, old writings from the 15th century mention a game called sepak raga. In Thailand, people played takraw during the reign of King Naresuan. Even ancient murals in Bangkok show the god Hanuman playing the game. These stories show how much people have loved ball games for a long time.

Modern sepak takraw began to take its current shape in the 1940s.

A man named Hamid Mydin helped create a new version in Penang. He added a net to the traditional game to make it faster. In 1945, the first organized competition was held at a swim club. Later, in 1960, leaders met in Kuala Lumpur to set standard rules. They chose the name "Sepak Takraw" as a compromise between Malaysia and Thailand. This helped everyone play the same way in big tournaments.

Today, the sport connects many different cultures and countries.

It is the national sport of Malaysia and is very popular in Thailand. In the Philippines, a related game called sipà was once the national sport. Many countries have their own names for similar games, like lataw in Laos or sek dai in Cambodia. The International Sepaktakraw Federation was formed in 1988 to run big events. These include the ISTAF World Cup and the King Cup in Thailand. It is a sport that brings people together through skill and play.
