Sepak takraw is a high-energy team sport originating from Southeast Asia.

It is played on a court that resembles a badminton court. Two teams, each consisting of two to four players, compete across a net. The game uses a ball made of woven rattan or synthetic plastic.

Players are forbidden from using their hands or arms. Instead, they must use their feet, knees, shoulders, chest, and head to manipulate the ball. Because it uses a net, it shares similarities with volleyball. Because it requires footwork, it is often compared to association football. This combination creates a sport defined by intense athleticism and acrobatic skill.

The mechanics of the game require precise coordination and physical control.

Players must strike the ball to send it over the net into the opponent's court. The objective is to score points by making the ball land on the opposing side. In modern competitive play, athletes often perform spectacular aerial maneuvers to return the ball. The ball's lightweight, woven construction allows for rapid movement and sharp angles. Success depends on a player's ability to react quickly to the ball's trajectory. Every contact with the ball must be deliberate to maintain control during high-speed rallies.

There are several distinct versions and styles of the game. Traditional forms often involve playing in a circle rather than across a net. In Indonesia, the Makassar game called "Raga" involves players passing the ball in a circle. In these settings, players might demonstrate tricks, such as balancing the ball on their heads. In Myanmar, the game is known as "chinlone," which is a performance-based activity. Chinlone is heavily influenced by traditional Burmese dance and martial arts. Unlike the competitive modern version, chinlone focuses on grace and demonstration to entertain.

The history of the sport is deeply rooted in ancient traditions. Some scholars suggest the game may have been introduced to Southeast Asia by the Chinese. They point to "cuju," an ancient military exercise involving a leather ball filled with feathers. In Malaysia, the "Sejarah Melayu" or Malay Annals mention a game called "sepak raga" in the 15th century. This manuscript describes an incident where a rattan ball hit a prince's headgear. In Thailand, historical evidence shows the game was played during the reign of King Naresuan between 1590 and 1605. Murals in Bangkok even depict the Hindu god Hanuman playing the game with monkeys.

Modern sepak takraw emerged through specific historical developments in the 20th century.

In 1945, Hamid Mydin, along with Mohamad Abdul Rahman and Syed Yaacob, introduced a new variation in Penang. They created "Sepak Raga Jaring," which added a net to the traditional game. This version was faster and required higher levels of athleticism. The first organized competition for this new style took place on May 16, 1945, in Penang. This event featured three teams competing for the Nyak Din Nyak Sham Trophy. This transition from a casual exercise to a competitive sport changed the game's trajectory.

Standardization was a crucial step in making the sport a global phenomenon. In 1960, officials from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Myanmar met in Kuala Lumpur. They sought to agree on a single name and a set of standard rules. The name "Sepak Takraw" was a compromise between the Malay word "sepak," meaning kick, and the Thai word "takraw," meaning a woven rattan ball.

Following this meeting, the Malayan Sepak Raga Federation was established in June 1960. The sport was later introduced as a medal event in the 1965 Southeast Asian Peninsular Games. This helped move the game from local villages to international arenas.

Today, sepak takraw is governed by the International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF), formed in 1988. ISTAF manages major international tournaments like the ISTAF World Cup and the ISTAF SuperSeries.

The sport holds great cultural significance, serving as the national sport of Malaysia. It also maintains strong connections to other regional games. For example, the Philippines had a related game called "sipà" which was its national sport until 2009. Similar traditions exist across the region, such as "lataw" in Laos and "sek dai" in Cambodia. This shared heritage connects diverse cultures through a single, rhythmic sport.
