A wadi is a river valley in the desert.

Most of the time, a wadi is dry. It only has water when there is heavy rain. This rain can cause a flash flood. A flash flood is a sudden, fast flow of water.

When it rains, the water moves very fast. It carries many things like mud, sand, and gravel. As the water moves, it loses power. This happens because the water sinks into the ground. When the water slows down, it leaves the sand and rocks behind. This is called deposition.

These piles of sand can build up into small dams. These dams change how the next flood flows.

Many different things live in a wadi. Some people live near them to find water underground. Desert travelers also look for plants that grow there.

Even in the big Sahara desert, plants can grow in wadis. Over a long time, a wadi can even turn into a ridge. This happens when old water paths fill up with dirt and plants. We call these inverted wadis.
