Water moves through a wadi in a very specific way. When heavy rain hits the desert, it can cause a sudden flash flood. The water rushes down the path with a lot of energy. However, the water quickly sinks into the porous ground. This is called percolation. As the water sinks, the stream loses its speed very fast. This causes the water to drop the sand and rocks it was carrying. This dropping of materials is called deposition. These piles of sediment can even form small dams.

People have used wadis for a very long time. Many desert travelers and nomadic groups rely on them to survive. Even in the huge Sahara desert, plants grow in wadis during certain seasons. These plants provide food and water for people and animals. Because of this, many human populations live near wadis. People can sometimes find water hidden beneath the surface of the ground there. This connection is so important that scientists created a field called wadi hydrology in the 1990s.

There are many different types of materials found in a wadi. The sediments can range from tiny mud to large pieces of gravel.

You might see ripples in the sand or cracks in the dried mud. Wind also plays a big part in shaping these valleys. Wind can blow sand over the wet ground to create new layers. These layers of wind and water sediment are often between 10 and 30 centimeters thick. Sometimes, an old wadi can even turn into a high ridge. This is called an inverted wadi.

The word wadi actually comes from the Arabic language. You can find this name in many places around the world. Some names in Spain even come from Arabic words for rivers. For example, the name Guadalajara comes from a phrase meaning river of stones.

These channels are characterized as ephemeral, which means they are temporary. They contain water only when heavy rainfall occurs in the region. Most wadis remain dry throughout the majority of the year. They are typically located on the nearly flat or gently sloping parts of a desert. These valleys often begin at the lowest parts of alluvial fans and extend toward inland sabkhas or dry lakes. Because there is no continual flow of water, permanent channels do not exist in these areas.

The way water moves through a wadi creates a unique geological process. When sudden, heavy rain falls, it often results in a flash flood. This flood carries a high amount of energy through the channel. However, the water quickly begins to percolate, or sink, into the porous sediment of the stream bed. Because of the lack of constant water and the abundance of sediment, wadis often show braided stream patterns. The sedimentary structures within a wadi are shaped by both water and wind. Flash floods create structures like ripples and common plane beds. In gravel layers, you may see imbrications, which are overlapping patterns of stones. Mud layers often show desiccation cracks, which are cracks formed when mud dries out.

Wind, also known as eolian processes, plays a massive role in shaping these valleys. When wadi sediments are moist or underwater, the wind deposits new material on top. This creates a sequence of alternating units made of wind and water sediments. Each of these layers typically ranges from 10 to 30 centimeters in thickness. Wind activity can also create large-scale cross-stratification and wedge-shaped cross-sets. You might even find horizontal loess, which is a fine, wind-blown sediment, within these sequences. This constant interaction between wind and water makes the geology of a wadi very complex.

Over long periods of time, a wadi can undergo a surprising transformation known as an inverted wadi. In this process, the former underground water flow allows vegetation and sediment to fill in the original eroded channel. Eventually, what was once a low wash becomes a high ridge running through the desert landscape.

This change turns the valley into a raised feature rather than a depression. It is a striking example of how water and sediment can completely reshape the physical appearance of the Earth over time.

The history of the word wadi is deeply connected to the Arabic language. The term is widely used in Arabic toponyms, which are place names. This influence even reached Spain through Andalusian Arabic. In some Spanish place names, the word was used to mean a permanent river. For example, Guadalajara comes from wādī al-ḥijārah, meaning "river of stones."
