The landscape is shaped by many natural forces over a long time. Tall mountains made of iron-rich sandstone stand above flat valleys filled with sand and salt. These mountains are very steep and rise almost straight up from the ground. Rainfall is quite rare in this desert climate. When it does rain, it often comes from sudden thunderstorms that cause flash floods.

These storms happen when cold air meets warm moisture from the Red Sea. This weather helps create the unique shapes found in the rocks.

Many different cultures have lived in Wadi Rum since prehistoric times. Ancient people left behind petroglyphs, which are drawings etched into rock walls.

In the Khaz'ali Canyon, you can see these carvings of humans and antelopes. The area was once part of the Kingdom of Edom between the 13th and 6th centuries BCE. Later, the Nabataeans also left their mark on the land. Even a British officer named T. E. Lawrence wrote about the beautiful red hills during the Arab Revolt in 1917. He described the mountains as a massive, red rampart.

Today, the Zalabieh Bedouin people live in and around the Wadi Rum village.

It is often called the Valley of the Moon or the Red Mountains. This area is the largest wadi, or river valley, in the country of Jordan. It sits near the border with Saudi Arabia and is east of the city of Aqaba. Because of its unique natural and cultural importance, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011. The valley is a place where ancient history and modern adventure meet.

The geology of Wadi Rum creates a landscape of extreme contrasts.

The area sits within the Sandstone Mountain and Valley Region. Tall, nearly vertical mountains made of iron-rich Umm Ishrin Sandstone dominate the view. These mountains are highly resistant to erosion. They rise above flat valleys filled with alluvial sediments, sand, and salt pans. Beneath these layers lies the Salib Arkosic Formation and the older Aqaba Complex of granitoids. An aquifer forms where these different rock layers meet. This creates springs on the eastern slopes of the mountains.

The climate in the valley is a desert climate, classified as BWh or BWk.

Rainfall is very scarce in this region. When rain does fall, it often arrives through sudden thunderstorms. These storms occur when cold upper air interacts with the Red Sea thermal low. This process combines with subtropical moisture in the atmosphere to trigger weather events. These thunderstorms often result in flash floods that shape the valley floor. Wind also plays a role by creating aeolian systems. These include sand dunes, natural bridges, and tafoni, which are small cave-like features in the rock.

Human history in Wadi Rum stretches back to prehistoric times. Various civilizations, including the Nabataeans, have inhabited the land.

Many ancient people left petroglyphs, which are images etched into rock, throughout the area. In Khaz'ali Canyon, these carvings depict humans and antelopes from the Thamudic era. The region was also part of the Kingdom of Edom between the 13th and 6th centuries BCE. Trade routes once connected Arabia to the Levant through this valley. This movement of people and goods helped the area prosper. In 1933, archaeologists discovered a Nabataean Temple, which was later excavated by a French team in 1997.

Today, the Zalabieh Bedouin people are the primary inhabitants of the region.

They arrived in the area around 1980. The village of Wadi Rum contains several hundred people living in concrete houses and goat-hair tents. The Bedouin culture places great importance on the camel, which serves as a symbol of pride. Camel racing is a significant sport used to establish manhood and power. The Zalabieh have also developed eco-adventure tourism to support their community. In 2017 alone, the area attracted 162,000 tourists. Visitors stay in traditional camps and participate in guided tours.

Adventure seekers are drawn to the valley for hiking and rock climbing.

Local Bedouins have climbed these sandstone mountains for many generations. Modern climbers often use "Bedouin Roads," which are traditional paths documented by locals. Jabal Ram is the second highest peak in Jordan. In 1952, Charmian Longstaff and Sylvia Branford completed the first recorded European ascent of Jabal Rum. Since the 1980s, many international teams have established new climbing routes. The first dedicated guidebook for the area was published in 1987.

Wadi Rum is also a famous location for the global film industry. Filmmakers use the desert to represent the surface of other planets. The landscape is so unique that it has served as a stand-in for Mars in films like *The Martian* and *Prometheus*. It has also appeared in major franchises like *Star Wars* and *Dune*. The 1962 film *Lawrence of Arabia* helped start Jordan's tourism industry by showcasing the valley. This connection between cinema and geography makes Wadi Rum a globally recognized icon of the desert.
