Geologists look at rocks and minerals. They want to know how Earth changed over time. They also study other planets and space rocks.

Rocks come in three main types. Igneous rocks form when hot, melted rock cools down. Sedimentary rocks form from bits of sand or mud. Metamorphic rocks form when heat and pressure change other rocks. These rocks can change back and forth in a cycle.

Minerals are the tiny parts that make up rocks. Every mineral has its own look. Scientists test them in many ways. They check the color and the hardness. They might even taste them! For example, a mineral called halite tastes like salt.

Earth is also made of layers. It has a crust on top. Below that is the mantle. At the center are the outer and inner cores.

Earth's surface is not one solid piece. It is made of large plates. These are called tectonic plates. They move slowly on top of the mantle. This movement can make mountains or cause earthquakes.
