One special layer is called a formation. A formation is a large body of rock. It has its own set of physical traits. These traits are called lithology. Lithology includes things like color and texture. It also includes the minerals inside the rock.

A formation must look different from the rocks next to it. It must be big enough to map on a surface. Formations can be thin or very thick. Some are only one meter thick. Others are many thousands of meters thick.

Scientists give each formation a name. They often use the name of a place. The Morrison Formation is named after a town in Colorado. The Kaibab Limestone is named after a plateau in Arizona.

Knowing these layers helps scientists a lot. They can study the history of a region. They can also find where minerals are hidden. This work is part of lithostratigraphy. That is the study of rock layers.
