Geological formation

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Earth is built from many layers of rock. A geological formation is a special part of these layers. It is a body of rock with its own unique look. Scientists call this look lithology. Lithology includes things like color and texture. It also includes the minerals and chemicals inside the rock. A formation must look different from the rocks around it.

To be a formation, a rock layer must follow rules. It must be large enough to map on the surface. It must also be big enough to trace underground. The thickness can change a lot. Some formations are less than one meter thick. Others are several thousand meters thick. A formation might be made of just one type of rock. It could also be a mix of different rock types.

People have studied these layers for a long time. The idea of a formation started with modern geology. Abraham Gottlob Werner used the term in his work. He studied how the Earth began between 1774 and 1817. Today, scientists use formal rules to name them. They use the North American Stratigraphic Code. These rules help everyone stay organized.

Scientists give formations names using local places. They often use a town or a plateau. The Morrison Formation is named after Morrison, Colorado. The Kaibab Limestone is named after the Kaibab Plateau in Arizona. A name cannot be used twice. The first person to name a formation gets to keep that name. Geologists also use a type section to study them. This is a perfect spot that shows the whole thickness.

Knowing about formations helps us understand our world. This study is called lithostratigraphy. It is the study of rock layers. Geologists use maps of formations to learn about the past. They can see how the land moved over time. These maps also help find hidden mineral resources. Sometimes, people use the word formation for cave shapes too. These are things like stalactites and stalagmites.
