He spent his early years learning how machines work. He worked for a company called Züp from 1908 to 1911. Later, he worked as a designer for Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft until 1912. He then went to lead a branch of Flugwerk Deutschland GmbH. This company made planes and special tools for flying. Karl helped run this business near Aachen and Munich. He even designed engines like the FD 1416.

Their goal was to build engines for planes and cars. This type of engine is called an internal combustion engine. These engines use fuel to create power for movement. The company grew very quickly in its first years. By 1915, the company had 370 workers helping them. They tried to build many new plane models. However, many of these early designs had small problems.

During the First World War, the company became very important. They made many engines for the war effort. Some groups, like the Prussian Army, did not want them. But other groups, like the Bavarian Army, did buy them. They used engines made through a company called Austro-Daimler. Franz Josef Popp helped manage these large orders in Munich. A designer named Max Friz created a special engine. It was a high-altitude engine known as the BBE. This engine was a huge success for the company.

As the company grew, things began to change for Karl. The company needed to reorganize its legal structure. Because of this, Karl Rapp resigned from his job. He likely left because he was not feeling well. At that same time, the company changed its name. It became Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH, which we know as BMW.

Franz Josef Popp became the new leader in 1917. The new company took over all the workers and factories. They continued to make aero-engines until the war ended. The successful BBE engine was renamed the BMW IIIa.

Karl Rapp lived a very interesting life after leaving BMW. He became a chief engineer at a different factory. He worked there until October 1923. Later, he moved to a beautiful place called Switzerland.

In 1934, he ran a small observatory there. He spent his time making solar observations of the sun. This means he used tools to study sunlight. He lived in Locarno until he died in 1962. Today, BMW remembers him as a founder of their company.
