He learned how to build machines early in his life. He worked for a few different companies. One company was called Züp. He also worked as a designer for Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft.

Later, Karl helped run a company called Flugwerk Deutschland. This company made planes and engines. Karl designed engines and even some early planes.

In 1913, Karl and Julius Auspitzer started a new company. They called it Rapp Motorenwerke. They wanted to make engines for planes and cars. The company grew very fast. By 1915, they had 370 workers.

During a big war, the company made many engines. Some engines were very successful. One was a high-altitude engine called the BMW IIIa. Because of these new engines, the company changed its name. It became Bayerische Motoren Werke, or BMW. Karl left the company around this time. He later worked at a machine factory. In his later years, Karl lived in Switzerland. He ran a small place to study the sun.

He died in 1962.
