The land here looks the way it does because of nature. About 10 million years ago, the Sierra Nevada mountains rose and tilted. This made the river beds very steep and created deep canyons.

Later, about one million years ago, huge sheets of ice called glaciers formed. These glaciers moved down the mountains. They carved the land into the U-shaped Yosemite Valley we see today.

People have been in this area for a very long time. The Ahwahneechee people lived in the valley for nearly 4,000 years. They called the area Ahwahnee.

Other tribes, like the Southern Sierra Miwok, also lived nearby. In 1851, a group called the Mariposa Battalion entered the valley. This led to a conflict known as the Mariposa War. This was a very hard time for the native people. Many were forced to leave their ancestral homes.

Many people worked to keep Yosemite safe for everyone. Galen Clark helped ask for protection for the valley. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant.

This was a big step for the whole country. It was the first time the government set land aside just to preserve it. Later, a man named John Muir led a movement to make it a National Park in 1890. This helped create the National Park System we use today.

Today, Yosemite is a place where many people visit to learn. About four million people visit the park each year.
