Nature has shaped the island in many interesting ways. The ground is very rocky because it is made mostly of granite.

There are no rivers on the island at all. Instead, there are many seasonal streams that flow when it rains. The island is nicknamed "The Island of the Winds." This is because very strong winds often blow across the land.

These winds can even change the shape of the rocky land.

History has left many stories on the island. Some people believe the name Mykonos comes from a Greek word for a "pile of stones."
