He was known for making things that were truly amazing. Some stories say he even made statues that looked alive. These statues seemed to move as if they were real. Many people used his name to describe great skill.

He is credited with many important inventions. Some ancient sources say he invented carpentry tools. These tools included the axe, the saw, and even glue. He may have also made the first sails for ships.

Daedalus also built a huge maze called the Labyrinth. This maze was made for King Minos on the island of Crete. It had many winding paths that were hard to escape. He built it to hold a creature called the Minotaur.

Daedalus had a complicated family life. He had a son named Icarus and a son named Iapyx. He also had a nephew named Perdix, or Talos.

Perdix was a very smart young inventor. He invented the saw and the compass. Daedalus became very jealous of the boy's talent. He tried to hurt his nephew by throwing him from the Acropolis. A goddess saved the boy by turning him into a partridge.

One of the most famous stories involves his escape from Crete. King Minos kept Daedalus and Icarus as prisoners. To get away, Daedalus made wings from feathers and wax.

He warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun. The heat would melt the wax and cause a fall. Icarus did not listen to his father's warning. He flew too high and the wax melted away. Icarus fell into the sea and died.

Daedalus named the island Icaria to remember his son.

Later, Daedalus traveled to Sicily to live with King Cocalus. King Minos tried to find him by using a riddle. The riddle involved a spiral seashell and a piece of string.

Daedalus solved it by using an ant and some honey. The ant walked through the shell to pull the string through. This clever solution showed his great intelligence once again. His stories help us think about how to use skill wisely.
