The city is very low to the ground. It sits only 1 metre above sea level. The weather follows a seasonal pattern. Summers are hot, wet, and often stormy. Winters are cold and dry with very little snow.

Several islands sit in the mouth of the river. These include Wihwa-do, Rim-do, Ryuch'o-do, and Tongryuch'o-do. On Wihwa Island, there is a huge greenhouse farm. This farm covers about 450 hectares. It was finished in 2026 to help after floods in 2024.

Sinuiju has a long and changing history. It grew as a major settlement during Japanese colonial rule. This happened because of a railway bridge across the river. The name Sinuiju means "New Ŭiju."

The city grew through logging and chemical work. After the hydroelectric Sup'ung Dam was built, industry increased. During the Korean War, the government moved its capital here for a short time. However, the city was badly damaged by air attacks in 1950. About 95 percent of the city was destroyed then. It has since been rebuilt.

Today, the city is a center for light industry.
