The land here is mostly flat and not very mountainous. This makes the province perfect for growing food. People often call it the "bread-basket" of North Korea. Many plains are used for farming different crops. Farmers grow rice, grains, and many vegetables there. One place is even named Kwail County, which means "fruit" in Korean. This county was made specifically to grow orchards.

The coastline is filled with many small islands. Some of these islands have no people living on them. Some large islands, like Baengnyeong-do, are managed by South Korea. Other large islands belong to North Korea. These include Kirin-do, Changrin-do, and Sunwi-do. There is also a line in the water called the Northern Limit Line. This line marks a disputed boundary between the two countries.
