geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Chagang is a province in the northwest part of North Korea. It is a very mountainous place. In fact, mountains cover 98 percent of the whole area. The land is quite high up. The average height is 750 meters above sea level. Most of the ground slopes between 15 and 40 degrees. To the north, Chagang borders the Jilin and Liaoning provinces of China. It also sits near Ryanggang and South Hamgyong to the east. South Pyongan is to the south, and North Pyongan is to the west.

The weather in Chagang changes a lot. It has a continental climate. This means the seasons feel very different from each other. Winters are long and very cold. Springs and falls are quite brief. In the summer, the weather can be wild. There are frequent downpours of rain and hail. You might also see a lot of thunder and lightning.

Chagang has a long and changing history. It was formed in 1949. It was made from part of North Pyongan. Before the Korean War, it was a very isolated land. Back then, it only had two small mines. It also had one timber mill and one distillery. Now, it is much busier. Its industrial output is 1,000 times larger than it was before the war.

The province is very rich in natural resources. It has many different kinds of minerals. It is a main source of gold, iron, and copper. It also has zinc, lead, and tungsten. You can even find crystals and valuable gems there. People use the water to create electricity. They have built large stations like the Unbong Power Station. They also build small power stations using local tools.

Many people live in the cities of Chagang. Kanggye is the capital city. It is home to a large timber processing factory. Huichon is the most developed city in the province. It has a huge machine tool factory and a silk mill. It is also where the North Korean University of Telecommunications is located. For a long time, tourists could not visit this province. This was likely because of weapons factories. Now, visitors can go to the city of Manpo. Manpo sits right across the river from China.
