Chagang Province

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Chagang Province is a significant administrative region in the northwestern part of North Korea. It serves as a vital industrial and military hub for the nation. The province is bordered by China's Jilin and Liaoning provinces to the north. To the east, it sits next to Ryanggang and South Hamgyong. South Pyongan lies to the south, while North Pyongan borders it to the west.

The geography of Chagang is defined by its extremely rugged terrain. Mountains cover 98 percent of the total land area. The mean height of the province is 750 meters above sea level. Most regions feature steep slopes ranging from 15 to 40 degrees. This mountainous landscape creates a distinct continental climate. The province experiences very cold and long winters. Springs and falls are quite brief. Summer weather often includes frequent downpours of rain and hail. Thunder and lightning also occur frequently during these months.

Chagang possesses immense mineral wealth that supports many industries. It is the primary source in North Korea for several key materials. These include lead, zinc, gold, copper, and molybdenum. The province also produces tungsten, antimony, and graphite. Other extracted resources include apatite, alunite, limestone, calcium carbonate, anthracite, and iron ores. Beyond these industrial minerals, the area contains crystals and valuable gems. These underground resources are central to the province's economic identity.

The history of the province shows a massive industrial transformation. Chagang was formed in 1949 after being demarcated from North Pyongan. Before the Korean War, the area was quite isolated. It contained only two primitive mines, one timber mill, and a distillery. Following the war, industrialization increased rapidly. The total industrial output is now 1,000 times greater than it was before the war. This growth includes power, machine, chemical, light, mining, and timber industries.

Energy production is a major part of the local economy. The province has become a national power base through hydroelectricity. Large stations include the Kanggye Youth, Unbong, and Jangjagang Power Stations. Local technicians have also developed small and medium-sized power stations. These small units use hydraulic turbines with capacities between 2 kW and 70 kW. To build these, workers use methods like log-dams, water-courses, rafts, and sluices. This local engineering helps increase the overall generating capacity of the region.

Urban centers in Chagang host various specialized industries. Kanggye is the provincial capital and features a major timber processing factory. Huichon is the most developed city in the province. Its development began during the Korean War when it served as a site for industrial relocation. Because it was isolated from main battlefields, it became a safe place for factories. Huichon now contains a large machine tool factory, a silk mill, and a hard glassware factory. It is also home to the North Korean University of Telecommunications.

Access to the province has been strictly controlled for many years. For a long time, Chagang was the only province completely inaccessible to tourists. This was likely due to the presence of weapons factories and nuclear weapon facilities. In May 2018, the area became a "Special Songun (military first) Revolutionary Zone." This designation helped conceal the province's military-industrial facilities. However, some changes occurred in 2019. The city of Manpo, located across the river from China, became accessible to tourists. Previously, the only accessible site was the Huichon Hotel.

Administratively, Chagang is divided into 3 cities and 15 counties. The three cities are Huichon, Kanggye, and Manpo. The population of Kanggye was 251,971 in 2008. Huichon had a population of 168,180 at that time. Manpo's population was 116,760. The 15 counties include areas such as Changgang, Chasong, and Chonchon. These divisions help manage the diverse needs of the mountainous population. The province remains a complex mix of natural beauty and heavy industry.
