It sits next to the Yellow Sea. To the north and east is North Hwanghae province. The southern border meets South Korea.

The land is not very hilly. This makes it great for farming. People call it the "bread-basket" of North Korea. This is because so much food grows there. Farmers grow rice, grains, and many vegetables. One area is called Kwail County. This name means "fruit" in Korean. It was made just to grow orchards.

The coast has many small islands. Some of these islands have no people. Large islands like Kirin-do belong to North Korea.

Haeju is the capital city. It is also a very large port. There are many old things to see here too. You can find ancient stone pagodas. There are also old tombs from long ago. One is called Anak Tomb No. 3. People also visit the Kangsosa Buddhist temple.
