Marche has a very long and busy history. In ancient times, it was known as the Picenum territory. People called the Picentes lived there during the Iron Age. Later, the Romans built many colonies in the area. They connected these places to Rome with special roads.

After the Roman Empire fell, many different groups arrived. The Goths and the Lombards lived here for a time. Eventually, Charlemagne conquered the land in the late eighth century. The name Marche comes from a medieval word meaning a border zone.

Many famous people were born in this special place. During the Renaissance, cities like Urbino were centers of art. The great painter Raphael was born in Urbino. Other famous names include the musician Rossini and the educator Maria Montessori.
