It is located in the central part of the country. The region covers a total area of 9,366 square kilometres. Nearly 1.5 million people live throughout this territory. Ancona serves as the region's capital and largest city.

Marche is bordered by several different places. To the north are Emilia-Romagna and the republic of San Marino. Tuscany and Umbria lie to the west. Lazio and Abruzzo border the region to the southwest and south. The entire eastern boundary is formed by the Adriatic Sea.

The physical landscape of Marche is defined by its varied terrain. Most of the region consists of hilly or mountainous land. The Apennine mountain range runs along the eastern side. This range descends through hills toward the Adriatic coast. One peak, Monte Vettore, reaches a height of 2,476 metres.

The hilly areas cover about two-thirds of the entire region. Wide gullies and short rivers intersect these hills. Deep river gorges also exist, such as the Furlo and Frasassi. The coastline is 173 kilometres long and is mostly flat. However, the area near Ancona features the eastern slopes of Monte Conero.

The climate in Marche changes based on your specific location. Inland areas near the mountains have a continental climate. These places experience cold and often snowy winters. The coastal areas near the sea have a more Mediterranean climate. Precipitation levels also vary across the landscape. Inland areas receive between 1,000 and 1,500 millimetres of rain annually. The Adriatic coast receives less, between 600 and 800 millimetres. This weather pattern supports different types of local life and agriculture.

Marche has a complex history involving many different groups. In ancient times, the area was known as Picenum. The Picentes people lived there during the Iron Age. Later, the Romans established colonies and connected them via roads.

After the Western Roman Empire fell, the Goths invaded the region. The area later became part of the Byzantine Exarchate of Ravenna. Charlemagne conquered the territory in the late eighth century. The name Marche comes from the medieval word "marca." This term means a "march" or a border zone. This refers to the region's history as a borderland of the Holy Roman Empire.

During the Renaissance, Marche became a major cultural center. Cities like Urbino and Pesaro were very important.

Many famous historical figures were born in this region. The painter and architect Raphael was born in Urbino. Other notable people include the musician Gioachino Rossini. The educator Maria Montessori was also born here. The region is also home to the artist Donato Bramante. These figures helped make the area a center for art and history.

The economy of Marche has changed significantly over time. In the past, it was considered a relatively poor region. It relied mostly on agriculture and traditional crafts. Today, the economy is much more diverse and modern. Many small craft workshops have grown into major global brands.

For example, the region is famous for footwear and leather goods. The Pesaro area is known for making furniture. Ancona is a center for engineering and shipbuilding. The town of Castelfidardo is a famous center for making accordions.

Agriculture remains an important part of the local way of life. Farmers grow grapes, olives, and various vegetables. Cereal production is also common in the region. Some people even participate in popular truffle hunting. The sea provides a supply of fish for coastal towns. Fishing centers include Ancona, Fano, and San Benedetto del Tronto. This combination of industry and farming helps support the 1.5 million inhabitants. The region remains a significant part of Italy's total economic output.
