Monaco

Monaco, officially known as the Principality of Monaco, is a sovereign city-state located in Western Europe.

It sits on the sunny French Riviera along the Mediterranean Sea.

The country is a semi-enclave, meaning it is mostly surrounded by France on its northern, eastern, and western sides. The Italian region of Liguria lies about 15 km to the east. Monaco is a microstate, which is a very small independent country. It is the second smallest sovereign state in the world, following Vatican City.

Despite its small size, it is the most densely populated country on Earth.

The government of Monaco operates as a semi-constitutional monarchy. Prince Albert II serves as the head of state and holds substantial political power.

A prime minister acts as the head of government. This leader can be either a Monégasque or a French citizen. Before an appointment is made, the monarch consults with the Government of France. The judiciary system also involves French magistrates who are detached from the local government. While Monaco is an independent nation, France is responsible for its military defense.

Monaco has a very long and complex history involving many European powers. The House of Grimaldi has ruled the principality with only brief interruptions since 1297.

In 1297, Francesco Grimaldi captured the fortress on the Rock of Monaco. He and his men famously dressed as Franciscan friars to complete the takeover. The family's rule was not always easy and involved many struggles. For example, the principality was occupied by France during the French Revolution. It was also under the care of the Kingdom of Sardinia after the defeat of Napoleon. During the Second World War, the territory was occupied by both Italy and Nazi Germany.

Economic changes in the 19th century transformed Monaco into a wealthy destination. In the late 1800s, the state opened the Monte Carlo Casino.

A new rail connection to Paris also helped people reach the area easily. The mild climate and beautiful scenery made it a popular place for wealthy tourists. To stay financially stable, Monaco became a major banking center. It also moved into the services sector and small, high-value industries. The country is known as a tax haven because it has no personal income tax for most residents. This policy helped attract many wealthy individuals to live there. In 2018, real estate prices reached €100,000 per square meter.

Monaco is a place of significant international and cultural activity. It is a member of the United Nations and the Council of Europe.

Although it is not part of the European Union, it follows certain EU policies regarding customs and borders. Because of its close relationship with France, Monaco uses the euro as its only currency. The principality is also famous for its high-speed motor racing. It hosts the annual Monaco Grand Prix, which is a major Formula One event.

Additionally, the local motorsports association hosts the Monte Carlo Rally in the French Alps every January.

Beyond wealth and racing, Monaco is a leader in marine science. The country is a center for marine conservation and research. It is home to the Oceanographic Museum, which is a famous landmark.

Monaco also hosts the International Atomic Energy Agency Marine Environment Laboratories. This is the only marine laboratory within the United Nations system.
