While people often use the name to describe the whole Monte Carlo Quarter, it is also the name of a specific ward called Monte Carlo/Spélugues. This ward is home to the famous Monte Carlo Casino. The larger Monte Carlo Quarter includes several other wards. These are La Rousse/Saint Roman, Larvotto/Bas Moulins, and Saint Michel. The entire quarter has a population of about 15,000 people. The smaller Monte Carlo/Spélugues ward contains about 3,500 residents.

The geography of the area is defined by its coastal position and steep terrain. The Monte Carlo quarter covers an area of 28.14 hectares, which is about 0.28 square kilometers. To the west, the area is bordered by La Condamine and the Ravin de Sainte-Dévote. To the east, it meets the wards of La Rousse and Larvotto. At the eastern border, you can cross into the French town of Beausoleil. Even further east lies the border of Italy. The climate in Monte Carlo is classified as a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. This means the region experiences warm, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The sea temperature remains relatively stable, averaging around 17.9 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

The history of Monte Carlo is closely tied to the leadership of Charles III of Monaco.

In 1856, Charles III granted a concession to Napoleon Langlois and Albert Aubert. They were tasked with building a German-style casino and a sea-bathing facility. This facility was intended to treat various diseases. The very first casino opened in La Condamine in 1862, but it was not successful. The casino moved several times before finally settling in the Les Spélugues area. For a long time, Monaco was difficult for people in Europe to reach. This changed in 1868 when a railway was installed. The railway brought an influx of people and helped Monte Carlo grow in wealth.

As the area developed, many significant buildings were constructed. Saint-Charles Church was completed in 1883 on Avenue Sainte-Charles.

The administrative structure of the area also changed over time. In 1911, a municipality was created for Monte Carlo. This municipality included La Rousse/Saint Roman, Larvotto/Bas Moulins, and Saint Michel. However, the municipalities merged in 1917 following accusations of government division. Since that merger, the areas have functioned as wards. Today, Monaco is organized into nine wards grouped into four quarters. One of these quarters is Monte Carlo, which was once served by a tramway system from 1898 to 1931.

Monte Carlo is a global center for luxury and high-end tourism. The Place du Casino is a world-famous area known for the extravagant display of wealth.
