Mont Blanc is a massive mountain located in the Alps.

It sits directly on the border between France and Italy. The summit reaches an elevation of 4,807.3 meters above sea level.

This makes it the highest mountain in Europe outside the Caucasus Mountains. It is also the second-most prominent mountain in Europe. Globally, it ranks as the 11th most prominent mountain. The mountain gives its name to the Mont Blanc massif. This mountain group spans parts of France, Italy, and Switzerland.

The geology of the massif is quite complex. Most of the mountains are formed from a large granite intrusion. Scientists call this type of large rock mass a batholith. This granite was forced upward through older layers of gneiss and mica schists. This happened during the Variscan mountain-forming event in the late Palaeozoic period. The summit of Mont Blanc is the exact point where these two rock types meet. The granite is mostly very coarse-grained. It ranges from microgranites to porphyroid granites.

Tectonic forces have shaped the landscape over millions of years. The massif is tilted in a north-westerly direction. During the Variscan orogeny, near-vertical faults were created in a north-south direction. Later, the Alpine orogeny caused further faulting and shear zones. These repeated tectonic phases broke the rock in many directions. Finally, past and current glaciation sculpted the land into its present form. The area is also rich in minerals. In 1873, Venance Payot catalogued 90 mineral types in the area. Today, researchers know of at least 68 separate mineral species in the massif.

The climate at Mont Blanc is cold and temperate. This is known as a Cfb climate in the Köppen classification. Altitude has a massive influence on the weather. The summit features a permanent ice cap. Temperatures drop significantly as you climb higher. The mountain can even create its own weather patterns. Precipitation levels change greatly depending on your height. The village of Chamonix receives about 1,400 mm of annual precipitation. The Col du Midi receives much more, totaling 3,500 mm. However, precipitation is actually lower near the summit, at only 450 mm.

History shows that Mont Blanc has always been a place of interest. It was the highest mountain of the Frankish Empire under Charlemagne. In 1786, Jacques Balmat and Michel Paccard made the first recorded ascent. This event is often seen as the start of modern mountaineering. Later, Marie Paradis became the first woman to reach the summit in 1808. In 1893, an observatory was built near the top.

Astronomer Pierre Janssen led this project. The building was supported by levers attached to the ice. However, the ice moved and the building eventually fell. The tower was the only part that could be saved.

Ownership of the summit has been a long dispute between France and Italy. The border usually follows the main Alpine watershed. However, the exact line near the summits is not agreed upon. Italian officials say the border follows the watershed. This would split the summits between both nations. French officials claim the border avoids the summits entirely. This would place them fully in France. This dispute involves areas of about 2 hectares on Mont Blanc. Modern Swiss mapping shows this as a disputed territory.

Today, the massif is a major hub for outdoor activities. People visit for hiking, climbing, and trail running. It is also a famous destination for winter sports like skiing.

The Mont Blanc Tunnel provides a vital transport route. Construction began in 1957 and finished in 1965. It is 11.6 km long and runs beneath the mountain. It connects Chamonix in France to Courmayeur in Italy.

Although a fire in 1999 caused many deaths, the tunnel was renovated. It now features advanced safety systems and escape shafts to protect travelers.
