Straight engine

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A straight engine is a special way to build a motor. It uses many cylinders lined up in one single row. This design is different from engines with two rows of cylinders. Some engines use a V shape or a flat shape instead. Straight engines are quite easy to build for many reasons. They only need one cylinder head on the very top. This makes them narrower than many other engine types. However, they can be quite long or very tall.

How these engines work depends on how many cylinders they have. A straight engine can have two, three, or even fourteen cylinders. The way the engine balances depends on the number of cylinders. It also depends on the firing interval, which is the timing of the parts. Some engines are tilted at an angle to fit better. We call these slant engines. Some buses even mount engines horizontally. This means the engine lies flat at a 90-degree angle. This helps the engine fit under the floor of the bus.

Many people have used these engines throughout history. In the 1920s and 1940s, straight-eight engines were very popular. Later, they were replaced by the smaller V8 engine design. Many aircraft used straight engines during the early years of flight. They were simple and had a low frontal area. This helped reduce drag, which is the air pushing against the plane. These engines also helped pilots see out of the cockpit better. Straight-six engines were very common during the First World War.

There are many famous engines to know about. The Chrysler Slant-6 engine was made from 1959 to 2000. The Pontiac Trophy 4 engine ran from 1961 to 1963. The Triumph Slant-4 engine was used from 1968 to 1981. In Germany, the Mercedes D.III and BMW IIIa were famous aircraft engines. The British Siddeley Puma was another well-known type. Many companies like Renault and Hirth also built these engines. They were popular in places like France and Germany.

Some aircraft engines use an inverted design. This means the crankshaft is at the top. The pistons hang down from the top instead. This helps the plane use a larger and better propeller. It also allows for shorter landing gear. Because the engine is mounted lower, the pilot can see more. The cylinder heads do not block the view forward. It also makes the exhaust system much simpler to build. This keeps gases away from the pilot in the cockpit.
