A flat engine is a special way to build a motor.

In this design, the cylinders sit on both sides of a central rod. This rod is called a crankshaft. Most flat engines use a setup called a boxer configuration. This name comes from how the parts move. The pistons move in and out at the same time. It looks like two boxers punching their gloves together.

This movement helps the engine stay very smooth. Because the parts move in opposite directions, they balance each other out. This means the engine does not shake as much as other types.

There are two main ways these engines work. The boxer design is the most common way. In a boxer engine, each pair of cylinders has its own separate crankpin on the rod. This keeps the balance very steady. Another way is called a 180-degree V engine.

In this version, each pair of pistons shares a single crankpin. This makes the engine design a bit simpler. While both types are flat, they move in different ways. The boxer style is often preferred because it has no unbalanced forces. This means the engine does not need extra parts to keep it from vibrating.

People have been using these engines for a long time. A German engineer named Karl Benz built the first flat engine in 1897.

He called it the kontra engine. It was a boxer-twin design. Early cars like the 1903 Ford Model A also used these engines. Later, the Volkswagen Beetle became very famous for using a flat-four engine. This engine helped the car become a success for many years. Many other makers began using flat engines as cars and planes became more common.

Flat engines come in many different sizes. They can have two, four, six, eight, or even twelve cylinders.

Small motorcycles often use flat-twin engines. For example, BMW has made boxer-twin motorcycles since 1923. Many airplanes use flat-six engines to fly. In the world of fast cars, the Porsche 911 has used a flat-six since 1964. Some huge racing cars used flat-eight or even flat-twelve engines. Even the Panhard EBR, a military vehicle, used a flat-twelve engine. These numbers show how many different ways engineers can use this design.

These engines are great for certain jobs. Because they are short and low, they help a car stay steady. This is called having a low centre of mass. A low centre of mass helps a car handle turns better. Flat engines are also good for air cooling. This is because the cylinders are wide and easy for air to reach.

You can find them in many places, from small planes to big racing cars. They might be wider than other engines, but their smoothness makes them special. Whether in a motorcycle or a Subaru car, they continue to be a smart choice.
