V engine

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A V engine is a special way to build a motor. It uses two rows of cylinders called banks. These banks connect to one single crankshaft. The crankshaft is a bar that turns to make the engine work. The two banks sit at an angle to each other. This shape looks like the letter V when you look at it from the front.

Many cars use these engines today. They are very important for making vehicles move.

These engines work in a very clever way. The two banks of cylinders are usually the same size. They sit at an angle called a V-angle. This angle can be very wide or very narrow. Some engines use a 180-degree angle. Others use a tiny angle of only 10 degrees.

Most V engines are shorter than straight engines. However, they are much wider than straight engines. This makes them a good choice for certain spaces.

People have been building V engines for a long time. Wilhelm Maybach designed the first V-twin engine in 1889. It was used in a Daimler Stahlradwagen car. In 1903, Léon Levavasseur made a V8 engine for racing boats and planes. A V12 engine followed in 1904 from Putney Motor Works in London.

Later, a German company called Deutz Gasmotoren Fabrik made a V6 in 1908. This engine helped power railway engines.

There are many different types of V engines. You might hear people say V6, V8, or V12. The number tells you how many cylinders are inside.

In 1950, Lancia made the first V6 for regular cars. This engine used a 60-degree angle. It also used separate crankpins to stop shaking. Some planes even used inverted engines in the 1920s and 1930s. This meant the crankshaft was at the top.

You can see V engines in many places. Most cars on the road use them. Some engines have 6, 8, or 12 cylinders. There are even much larger ones with 32 cylinders.

They are different from flat engines too. A V engine is narrower and taller than a flat engine. It also has a higher center of mass. This means the weight is held higher up. Engineers choose the best shape for every job.
