Two-stroke engine

A two-stroke engine is a special kind of motor that makes power.

Most motors use a four-stroke cycle to work. A two-stroke engine is different because it finishes its cycle in only two moves. The piston moves up once and then moves down once. These two moves happen during just one turn of the crankshaft.

This makes the engine very powerful for its small size. Because they have fewer moving parts, these engines are often light and cheap to make. They can also work in any position. This is possible because the oil is mixed right into the fuel.

To understand how it works, we can look at the two strokes. In the first stroke, the piston moves from the bottom to the top. As it moves, it squeezes a mixture of fuel and air. At the same time, the engine clears out old exhaust.

The second stroke is where the real power happens. The fuel mixture burns and expands, which pushes the piston back down. Near the bottom, a process called scavenging begins. This means fresh fuel moves in to replace the burnt gases. This happens very quickly in just one revolution.

People have been working on these engines for a long time. In 1881, a Scottish engineer named Dugald Clerk patented a design. His engine used a separate cylinder to help it work. Later, an Englishman named Joseph Day created a different version. His design used the area below the piston as a pump. An employee of his, Frederic Cock, even found a way to make an engine without any valves. In 1880, the German inventor Karl Benz also made a two-stroke gas engine. Finally, Alfred Angas Scott made the first truly practical version in 1908.

Today, you can find these engines in many different places.

They are very common in small tools like chainsaws and leaf blowers. You might also see them in mopeds, dirtbikes, or even small glider planes. Some big ships and trains use large diesel versions of this engine. In the past, many people drove cars with these engines. Brands like Saab from Sweden and Suzuki from Japan used them. However, many countries stopped making two-stroke cars in the 1980s. This happened because these engines can create more pollution than others.

Even though they are small, they are used for big jobs.

Because they are light, they are perfect for handheld tools. They are also great for boats because they can work even if the boat tilts. Some engines use a reed valve to help fuel enter. Other designs use a rotary valve, which is a spinning part that opens the path. There is also a way called loop scavenging. This was named after Adolf Schnürle, who invented it in the 1920s. It helps the fuel swirl around to make the engine work better.
