A flat engine is a special type of motor.

Its parts sit on both sides of a central rod. This rod is called a crankshaft. Most flat engines use a boxer design. In this design, the pistons move in and out at the same time. It looks like two boxers punching their gloves together.

This way of moving helps the engine stay smooth. It does not shake as much as other engines. Because they are short and low, they help cars stay steady. This is called a low centre of mass.

Karl Benz built the first flat engine in 1897. Today, these engines are common in airplanes. They are also used in many motorcycles. Some fast cars use them too. For example, the Porsche 911 uses a flat-six engine. These engines can have many parts. Some have two, four, or six. Even some racing cars used engines with twelve parts!
