A radial engine is a special kind of motor. The cylinders stick out from the middle. They look like the spokes on a wheel.

Because of this shape, the parts work in a unique way. One piston uses a master rod. This rod connects directly to the center shaft. Other pistons use smaller rods. These rods pin to rings on the master rod.

Many of these engines have an odd number of cylinders. This helps them run smoothly. In a five-cylinder engine, the parts fire in a set order. This keeps the power steady.

These engines were very common in planes. Most use air to stay cool. Some older ones used water to stay cool.

One famous engine was the Wright J-5 Whirlwind. It was very reliable. Charles Lindbergh used a similar engine to fly across the ocean. Another big name was Pratt & Whitney. They made the Twin Wasp engine. It was used in many planes during wars. Nearly 175,000 of those engines were built.
