Straight engine

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A straight engine has many parts in one row. These parts are called cylinders. They line up in a single line. This design is easy to build. It uses only one cylinder head. A cylinder head is a part that sits on top. This engine is very narrow. But it can be long or tall.

Some engines tilt at an angle. We call these slant engines. Some buses use engines that lie flat. This helps the engine fit under the floor. This keeps the bus from being too tall.

Many planes used straight engines long ago. They were simple to make. They also helped pilots see better. Some engines were even turned upside down. This is called an inverted engine. In this way, the pistons hang down. This lets the plane use a larger propeller. It also helps the pilot see the view ahead.

Straight engines are in many things. They are in cars and motorcycles. They were also in many old planes. Some had four or six cylinders. Others had as many as fourteen.
