Making cars has changed a lot over time. In the 1860s, hundreds of makers began building horseless carriages. At first, workers assembled cars by hand. This was a very slow process. Later, engineers used a conveyor belt system. In this way, the car moves through different stations. Specialized engineers work on the car at each stop. By the 1960s, companies began using robotic equipment. Now, most cars are built using automated machinery.

Many countries have led the world in making cars. For a long time, the United States was the leader. In 1929, U.S. companies made over 90% of the world's cars. The U.S. had one car for every 4.87 people then. Later, Japan became a leader in 1980. China took the top spot in 2009. In 2024, China produced more than 31 million vehicles. China also produced the most passenger cars in the world that year.

Safety is a very important part of this industry. It means that people do not face danger from a vehicle. There are many strict rules and regulations to follow. Makers must follow local or international laws to sell cars. One important framework is called ISO 26262. This helps companies achieve functional safety. If a maker finds a defect, they may issue a product recall. This means they ask to return a batch of cars to fix them.

Building cars also affects our planet. The industry uses a huge amount of water. Some estimates say it takes a lot of water to make just one car. This water is used for painting, washing, and cooling. In 2022, a Tesla factory in Germany faced challenges due to low groundwater. Many countries are also working to change how cars use energy. Some leaders want all new cars to be zero-emission by 2035. This would help reduce the impact on the environment.
