His name is linked to a very famous legend. This story helped inspire the long races we see today. People often call him a hero of the Persian Wars. He lived in the 5th century BC. Many people still wonder about the true story of his life.

There are two main versions of his story. The first version comes from a writer named Herodotus. He said Pheidippides ran from Athens to Sparta to ask for help. This was to prepare for a battle against the Persians in 490 BC.

He ran for about two days to finish this trip. A second version says he ran from Marathon to Athens. In this version, he ran to announce a victory. He supposedly said "Joy, we win!" and then died.

Historians study these stories very carefully. Herodotus wrote his account only 30 or 40 years after the battle. Because of this, many believe Pheidippides was a real person. However, Herodotus never mentioned the run from Marathon to Athens.

A writer named Lucian wrote about the Marathon run much later. Some experts think the Marathon-to-Athens story was a romantic invention. They believe the two different stories got mixed up over time.

Different writers used different names for him. Herodotus used the name Pheidippides in his manuscripts. Other writers like Plutarch and Lucian used the name Philippides.

In 1879, a poet named Robert Browning wrote a poem. His poem combined both versions into one big legend. This poem made the story part of popular culture. It helped people believe the legend was one single event.

This legend changed how we think about sports today. Michel Bréal used the story to create the marathon race. He wanted it for the first modern Olympics in 1896.

Today, runners still honor his long trips. The Spartathlon is a race from Athens to Sparta. It celebrates his run across the Greek countryside. Another race is called the Authentic Pheidippides Run. It follows his round trip from Athens to Sparta and back.
