He was a courier. This means he ran to carry news. Different stories tell different things about him.

One old story comes from a writer named Herodotus. He said Pheidippides ran from Athens to Sparta. He did this to ask for help before a battle. He ran for about two days.

Other stories say he ran from a place called Marathon to Athens. He wanted to tell the people they won a battle. In these stories, he died right after telling the news. Many people think this part of the story was made up later.

A poet named Robert Browning combined these stories in 1879. His poem helped make the legend famous. This legend inspired the modern marathon race. The first modern Olympics used this idea in 1896.

Today, people still run to honor him. There is a race called the Spartathlon. It is a very long run from Athens to Sparta. It celebrates his long trip across the Greek countryside.
