Modern Talking was a highly successful German pop duo.

The group consisted of Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders. Bohlen served as the arranger, songwriter, producer, and lead guitarist. Anders provided the lead vocals and played the piano and keyboards. Together, they became Germany's most successful pop duo in history. Their music reached massive audiences across Europe, Asia, South America, and the Middle East. By the time they disbanded for the final time in 2003, they had sold 120 million singles and albums worldwide.

The group's signature sound relied on a specific musical mechanism. Bohlen used falsetto choruses, which are high-pitched singing parts. He drew inspiration for this from the song "Precious Little Diamond" by Fox the Fox. To achieve these high choruses, a studio vocal lineup was used. This lineup included Rolf Köhler, Michael Scholz, and Detlef Wiedeke. These singers helped produce the high-pitched sounds characteristic of the group. While they were essential to the sound, they were not credited on the albums. This eventually led to a legal settlement between the singers and Bohlen.

Modern Talking's career can be divided into two distinct eras. The first era lasted from 1983 to 1987. During these years, they released two albums every year. Their music was influenced by disco-pop, schlager music, and romantic songs from Italy and France. The second era was a successful comeback from 1998 to 2003. During this time, they used updated recording techniques. They also included American rapper Eric Singleton to provide rap vocals on several singles. This era helped them reach a new generation of listeners.

The history of the duo began in West Berlin in early 1983. They achieved unexpected global popularity in early 1985. Their breakout single, "You're My Heart, You're My Soul," reached the top ten in 35 countries. In Germany, the song stayed at the top of the charts for six consecutive weeks. This single alone sold eight million copies. Other major hits from this period included "Cheri, Cheri Lady" and "Brother Louie." These songs helped their debut album, "The 1st Album," reach platinum status in Germany.

Significant numbers define the scale of their success. Between 1985 and 1987, the duo sold 65 million records. Their comeback album, "Back for Good," reached the number-one spot in 15 different countries. In Europe alone, that single album sold three million copies. The follow-up album, "Alone," also sold over one million copies in Europe. By 2003, the duo had earned over 400 gold and platinum awards worldwide. These figures cement their place as a major force in the global music industry.

Modern Talking also played a role in the cultural history of the Cold War. They were one of the first Western bloc bands allowed to sell records in the Soviet Union. This change happened because of Mikhail Gorbachev's glasnost reforms in 1986. These reforms opened the Soviet sphere to Western music. Because of this timing, the duo nurtured a large and enduring fanbase in Eastern Europe. This connection helped them maintain popularity even as musical trends changed elsewhere.

Despite their success, the duo faced internal challenges and professional criticism. The relationship between Bohlen and Anders was often quarrelsome. This tension led to their first disbandment in 1987. After they reunited, a second breakup occurred in 2003. This was reportedly sparked by Bohlen's autobiography, which contained a negative portrayal of Anders. Additionally, music critics sometimes criticized the duo. Some British critics, such as members of the Pet Shop Boys, noted a lack of originality. They suggested that many of the songs sounded very similar to one another.
