The Everly Brothers were a highly influential American musical duo.

Consisting of Isaac Donald "Don" Everly and Phillip "Phil" Everly, they became pioneers of country rock. They achieved this by blending elements of rock and roll, country, and pop music. The duo was specifically recognized for their steel-string acoustic guitar playing. They were also famous for their close-harmony singing style. This technique involves singing two parts that are very close together in pitch. This unique sound helped shape the musical landscape for many future artists.

The brothers' musical development followed a specific sequence of steps. They began as children in the 1940s performing on the radio in Iowa. At that time, they sang as the Everly Family alongside their parents. Later, they moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, for high school. There, they performed on both radio and television programs. Their talent eventually caught the attention of Chet Atkins. Atkins was the manager of the RCA Victor studios in Nashville. He began to promote the brothers, which helped them move toward professional recording.

The brothers' career can be divided into several distinct stages. Their early career began in the mid-1950s with their first recordings. In 1956, they started writing and recording their own music. This led to their first major success in the spring of 1957. Their next stage involved signing with Warner Bros. Records in 1960. During this period, they released their biggest-selling single, "Cathy's Clown." They also faced a period of military service in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. This service began in 1961 and caused their musical output to drop. Finally, they entered a solo period in the early 1970s before reuniting later.

History shows that the brothers' success was built on specific hits and labels. After a brief time with Columbia Records, they signed with Cadence Records. In 1957, they released "Bye Bye Love," which became their first million-seller. This song reached number one on the country charts. They also found success with songs like "Wake Up Little Susie" and "All I Have to Do Is Dream." In 1960, they moved to Warner Bros. Records. Their song "Cathy's Clown" sold eight million copies. This single was also the first selection Warner Bros. ever released in the United Kingdom.

The significance of the Everly Brothers is measured by their massive sales and influence. By 1962, their records had reportedly generated $35 million in sales.

Their impact on the music industry was profound. Many top acts of the 1960s were heavily influenced by their harmony style. These groups included the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Bee Gees, and Simon & Garfunkel. In 2015, Rolling Stone ranked them as the number one greatest duo of all time. They were also honored with inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

There were several notable facts regarding their professional challenges. In 1961, the brothers had a falling out with Wesley Rose, the CEO of Acuff-Rose Music. This dispute occurred during the recording of the song "Temptation." Because the brothers recorded a song that Rose did not publish, he blocked certain releases. To avoid paying royalties to Acuff-Rose, the brothers used the pseudonym "Jimmy Howard" for some songs. They also started their own label called Calliope Records. Don Everly even recorded an instrumental version of "Pomp and Circumstance" under the name "Adrian Kimberly."

The Everly Brothers' legacy connects to the broader evolution of modern music genres. By combining country roots with pop and rock, they helped create the country rock genre. Their work shows how individual artists can navigate complex industry systems like publishing and record labels. Even through periods of declining popularity in the United States, they maintained success in the U.K. and Canada.
