They were known for playing steel-string acoustic guitars. The brothers, Don and Phil Everly, used a special style called close-harmony singing. This means their voices sounded very close together in a beautiful way. They combined elements of rock and roll, country, and pop music. This helped them become pioneers of a style called country rock. People still value their music for its unique sound and skill.

Their musical journey started very early in their lives. Don was born in Kentucky in 1937. Phil was born in Illinois in 1939. They grew up in a very musical family. As children in the 1940s, they sang on the radio in Iowa. They performed as the Everly Family alongside their parents. Later, they moved to Tennessee and performed on radio and television. A man named Chet Atkins noticed them and helped them find success.

In 1956, the brothers began writing and recording their own songs. Their first big hit was "Bye Bye Love" in the spring of 1957. This song became their first million-seller. They had many more hits in 1958, like "Wake Up Little Susie." In 1960, they signed with Warner Bros. Records. They recorded "Cathy's Clown," which was their biggest-selling single. This song sold eight million copies.

Life was not always easy for the duo. In 1961, they joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve. This meant they could not make as much music for a while. They even performed on television while wearing their Marine uniforms. They also had some disagreements with a music company called Acuff-Rose. These disputes and changing musical tastes made them less popular in the United States. However, they still had many hits in the United Kingdom and Canada.

Even after they stopped working as a duo in 1973, their impact stayed. They reunited in 1983 and performed together until 2005. Many famous bands from the 1960s learned from them. These groups included the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and the Bee Gees. The Everly Brothers were put into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. They also joined the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
