He is best known for a special way of playing with three fingers. Before him, most people played with a style called frailing. In that old style, players moved their whole hand downward to hit the strings. Scruggs used a much different way that made the banjo a star. His style moved the instrument from the background to the front of the stage. Because of him, the banjo became a solo instrument that people loved to watch.

His three-finger style works by keeping the hand very still.

Instead of moving the whole hand, he only moved his fingers and thumb. He wore metal finger picks on three of his digits. He would pluck the strings downward with his thumb. Then, he would pluck upward with his index and middle fingers in a quick sequence. This created a bright and loud sound that people found very exciting. Some people said his playing sounded like thumbtacks plinking on a tin roof. This method allowed him to play fast melodies and rhythms at the same time.

Earl was born on January 6, 1924, in North Carolina.

He grew up in a family that loved music. His father played the banjo, and his mother played the pump organ. When Earl was only ten, he discovered his three-finger style by accident. He was playing a song called "Reuben" and realized he was using three fingers. He was so excited that he ran through his house yelling about it. He spent almost all his free time practicing to make his timing perfect. He later played in a factory before returning to music full-time.

In 1945, Scruggs joined Bill Monroe's band, the Blue Grass Boys.

This group helped create a new type of country music called bluegrass. Scruggs and singer Lester Flatt eventually left Monroe to start their own duo. They called themselves Flatt and Scruggs. They became very popular in the early 1960s with the song "The Ballad of Jed Clampett." This song was the theme for the TV show *The Beverly Hillbillies*. It was Scruggs's first recording to reach number one on the Billboard charts. The duo recorded over 50 albums together during their 20 years as a team.

Scruggs earned many great honors during his long career.

He won four Grammy Awards and a National Medal of Arts. His famous song "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" was even added to the National Recording Registry. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. After he passed away in 2012, a special building was opened in his home state. The Earl Scruggs Center in North Carolina is a $5.5 million facility. It helps students learn about his music through classes and field trips.
