It tells a story about an aging gang of outlaws. These men live near the border of Mexico and the United States in the year 1913. The movie is known as a revisionist Western. This means it shows a different side of the old West than older movies did. The film was quite controversial when it first came out. This was because it showed very graphic violence. It also showed men who were crude and struggling to survive in a changing world. Many people now consider it one of the greatest films ever made.

Making the movie involved many new and exciting steps. The director, Sam Peckinpah, used a style called quick-cut editing. This means the camera switches between different views very fast. He also used both normal motion and slow motion images. This was a revolutionary way to film action in 1969. The crew even worked hard to make the sounds feel real. In most movies back then, every gun sounded the same. Peckinpah insisted that every different type of gun have its own unique sound. The film was shot using Technicolor and Panavision to make the colors and views look great.

Sam Peckinpah directed this big project. He wanted to make a film that felt more real than the Westerns of the past. He was inspired by the violence in other movies and the feeling of the Vietnam War. The story was written by Peckinpah, Walon Green, and Roy N. Sickner. To get the right look, they filmed in Mexico. They used locations like the Nazas River and the Hacienda Ciénaga del Carmen. This hacienda is located deep in the desert between Torreón and Saltillo, Coahuila. The crew worked very hard on the many different camera setups. By the end, they had used 1,288 different setups to film the scenes.

Many talented actors brought the characters to life. William Holden played the leader, Pike Bishop. Ernest Borgnine and Robert Ryan were also stars in the film. The director looked at many famous actors before choosing his cast. For example, he thought about casting Lee Marvin as Pike Bishop. He also wanted to cast Robert Blake as Angel but changed his mind. The role of the general, Mapache, went to the Mexican director Emilio Fernández. The film earned several big awards and nominations. The writers were nominated for an Oscar for best screenplay. Jerry Fielding was also nominated for his work on the music.

Today, the film is seen as a very important part of history. In 1999, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation. They put it in the United States National Film Registry. They did this because the movie is culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. This means it has had a big impact on our world. The American Film Institute also gave it high rankings. They listed it as the 79th best American film ever. They also ranked it as the sixth-best Western in their list of top films. It remains a famous example of how movies can change forever.
