Robert Aldrich was a famous American film director and producer. He worked during the Golden Age of Hollywood. He was known for making many different kinds of movies. These included westerns, war films, and dark stories called film noir. He also made dark melodramas with a Gothic feel. His movies often pushed the boundaries of what was shown in mainstream cinema.

His work was famous for its complex look at human behavior. Many people in the French New Wave film movement were influenced by him.

Aldrich learned how to make movies by working as an assistant director. He spent nine years learning the basics of the craft. He worked on many different types of projects. He learned how to set a location and an atmosphere. He also learned how to plan a camera shot. He studied how to film action scenes and how to talk to actors.

He even learned how to create a visual connection between the camera and the audience. He believed that working with both great and terrible directors was a wonderful education.

Robert was born in Cranston, Rhode Island, into a very wealthy family. His family, the Aldriches, held a lot of social power. His father, Edward Burgess Aldrich, was a powerful publisher and politician. His grandfather, Nelson Wilmarth Aldrich, was a very famous U.S. Senator.

His family also included famous people like the Rockefeller family. An aunt of his married into the Rockefeller fortune. This meant he had many powerful cousins in government and business.

Despite his rich background, Aldrich chose a different life. He was a student at the University of Virginia. He studied economics, which was a traditional path for his family. However, he decided to drop out of college to work in movies.

He took a job as a production clerk at RKO Studios. This was a low-level job that paid only $25 a week. Because he chose art over his family's business, he was disinherited. This meant he was cut off from his family's large fortune.

Throughout his career, Aldrich made many famous films. Some of his most notable movies include *Vera Cruz* from 1954. He also directed *Kiss Me Deadly* in 1955 and *The Big Knife* in 1955. Other well-known films are *The Dirty Dozen* from 1967 and *The Longest Yard* from 1974.

He was also a leader for other film workers. He served as the president of the Directors Guild of America for two terms. Today, the guild even has an award named after him.
