Miller was a master at arranging music for his band. Arranging is the way a writer decides which instruments play which notes. He created a special sound using a lead clarinet over four saxophones. This became a famous style for his big band. His band did not use a string section like some others. Instead, they used a stand-up bass in their rhythm section. They also traveled often to play many radio broadcasts.

Miller's musical journey began in his youth in the Midwest. He was born in Clarinda, Iowa, in 1904. As a young boy, he earned money milking cows. He used that money to buy his first trombone. He later played the cornet and the mandolin too. In 1923, he went to the University of Colorado at Boulder. He eventually left school to pursue music as a full career.
