He was a highly successful recording artist and a skilled trombonist. Miller led one of the most popular orchestras of the 20th century. His civilian ensemble, Glenn Miller and his Orchestra, dominated the music charts for years. From 1939 to 1942, they were the best-selling recording band in the United States. His music was heard through constant touring and daily radio broadcasts.

Miller achieved his fame through the art of musical arrangement. An arranger decides which specific instruments play which notes in a piece. In 1935, while working with the Ray Noble orchestra, Miller developed a signature sound. This style featured a lead clarinet playing over a section of four saxophones. His civilian orchestra was unique because it lacked a string section. Instead, the rhythm section utilized a stand-up bass to maintain the beat. This specific instrumentation helped define the sound of his most famous recordings.

His musical career included many different roles and types of performance. He began as a soloist on the trombone, playing in groups like Ben Pollack's band. However, he eventually shifted his focus toward composing and arranging music. He published a songbook in 1928 titled "125 Jazz Breaks for Trombone." Miller also worked as a freelance musician for various famous artists. He played on significant recording sessions for the Dorsey Brothers and vocalist Bing Crosby. He even appeared in films, such as "The Big Broadcast" in 1936.

Miller's early life was shaped by hard work and a passion for music.

He was born in 1904 in Clarinda, Iowa. As a child, he earned money by milking cows. He used these earnings to purchase his first trombone. He later played the cornet and the mandolin as well. Miller attended the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1923. He eventually dropped out of the university to pursue music professionally. He even missed his own high school graduation to perform in an out-of-town gig.

His commercial success was unprecedented during the early 1940s.

Miller's song "Chattanooga Choo Choo" became the first gold record ever produced. This track was also featured on the soundtrack of his film, "Sun Valley Serenade." In a span of only four years, Miller achieved 16 number-one records. He also secured 69 hits that reached the top ten. His hits included "In the Mood," "Moonlight Serenade," and "Pennsylvania 6-5000."

These numbers exceeded the career totals of later icons like Elvis Presley and the Beatles.

During World War II, Miller's career took a patriotic turn. He volunteered to join the United States military in 1942. He became an officer in the US Army Air Forces. Miller formed the Major Glenn Miller Army Air Forces Orchestra to entertain the troops. This military unit included a full string section. This group served as a forerunner for many modern US military big bands. He worked hard to bring music to the soldiers during the conflict.

In December 1944, Miller went missing in action during a flight.

The flight was traveling from England to France over the English Channel. An Army investigation eventually led to an official finding of death for Miller. He was officially declared dead one year and one day after he disappeared. Because his remains were not recoverable, he is listed on the Tablets of the Missing in England.
