At age 17, he joined a group called the Idols. It was here that he met Loukas Sideras and Evángelos Papathanassíou, known as Vangelis. These musicians later formed the progressive rock act Aphrodite's Child. Their final album, titled 666, was based on the Book of Revelation. This album eventually became a cult classic within the progressive rock genre. Roussos also worked with Vangelis on film scores like Sex Power and Magic. He even contributed to the soundtrack for the film Blade Runner.

As a solo artist, Roussos reached new heights of popularity. He launched his solo career in 1971 with the song "We Shall Dance." This track became a top ten hit in both Belgium and the Netherlands. His popularity peaked during the mid-1970s with several successful albums. In 1976, his single "Forever and Ever" reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. He also had a hit in 1975 with "Happy to Be on an Island in the Sun." His success in Europe was so notable that a BBC producer made a documentary called "The Roussos Phenomenon" in 1976.

He was raised in a Greek family within a cosmopolitan port city. His father, George, was an engineer and a classical guitarist. His mother, Olga, performed with an amateur Greek theatrical group. As a child, Roussos studied music and sang in a Byzantine choir at a Greek Church. The atmosphere of Alexandria exposed him to jazz, Arabic, and Greek Orthodox music. However, the Suez Crisis in 1956 caused his family to lose their possessions. This event led them to move to Greece to start over.

Throughout his long career, Roussos maintained success across many decades and styles. In the 1980s, he found significant popularity in France. He released albums like Le Grec and Voice and Vision, which earned gold status. He also released a disco hit titled "L-O-V-E (Got A Hold Of Me)" in 1978. In 1989, he recorded a duet called "Young Love" with German singer Drafi Deutscher. Even in the 1990s, he released acclaimed work such as the album Insight. He continued to tour and record well into his later years, including a comeback in 2009.
